The Infiniti Q50 had a new look revealed in New York City, thanks to two of the hottest designers in the high-fashion world. The cars were unveiled to media at the Infiniti of Manhattan dealership located in the city’s famed Hell’s Kitchen area.

“I was totally blown away when I saw it; the ombre?-effect that we created [with the exterior paint], and set out to create, really worked as an object. That emphasized the movement and the shape of the car, which is what was most important to me,” said Zac Posen, fashion designer.

Posen dresses some of today’s hottest celebrities. He and his contemporary, Thom Browne, each took a turn at outfitting the newest addition to the Infiniti lineup. These custom-tailored cars feature elements exclusive to each designer’s aesthetics.

“In talking to Infiniti at the beginning and really learning their design philosophy, and that being very individual, very secure and confident in being an individual, that was how I approached this initially, and wanted to do something as conceptual as possible for making sure the customer saw something that was really unique and individual,” said Browne.

The Thom Browne 2014 Infiniti Q50 exterior features a chrome finish. The vehicle is accented with his signature red, white and blue stripe throughout, from the seats to the floor mats, and stitching on the steering wheel. There’s also Browne’s hallmark sterling silver ring encircling the gear-shift handle.

With a more feminine flair, Posen’s creation displays a unique paint application that evokes the back of a glamorous silk gown. The interior’s inspiration?
“Then I opened the door and got into what I call the red-carpet interior. Working with very luxurious materials, the shagreen handle, the shagreen stick, it’s all piped in leather that contrasts it. And playing with tonality of reds,” said Posen.

Gilt.com joined with Infiniti to offer these luxury sports sedans; both brands say the partnership just made sense.

“Gilt and Infiniti have very similar customers. They are very fashion savvy, tech savvy, they like new things and we think this is a great partnership,” said Kelly MacDonald, Infiniti Marketing.

The two buyers of these 2014 Infinitis will also receive a $10,000 Gilt.com shopping credit, as well as a style consultation.

“From here the cars are going to five events focused around Gilt City shopping events. We’ll have Thom- and Zac-designed concept rooms to house their cars in five cities. So next week it goes to Dallas, then Chicago, then New York, Miami and L.A., from now until December. We have a chance to bring the cars to life so people can see them in person,” said Clara Pang, business development, Gilt.

These Infiniti Q50 packages will be sold for $75,000 each on gilt.com in December with a portion of the proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

INFINITI DESIGN: TAILORING FOR A PREMIUM BRAND

November 22, 2017

Power and artistry. Bold yet nuanced. Emotional yet technical. The Infiniti design philosophy pulls together seemingly contrasting elements into a harmonious duality, giving the brand a distinctive presence in the premium world.

Infiniti design is inspired by nature, poetry or sculpture but the execution is always bold and powerful. The creativity and innovation which stem from the interplay of such contrasts have given rise to a singular voice and vision for Infiniti’s expanding product portfolio, representing an alternative to the status quo.

From body development to the tailoring of the interior, Infiniti designers take a disciplined artistic approach to shape each vehicle as would craftsmen in a classical Italian carrozzerie, expressing the dualities through bolder and more sensual sculpting.

“Infiniti is a brand driven by design and by the desire to deliver vehicles that are evocative and progressive,” said Shiro Nakamura, Chief Creative Officer of Infiniti and Senior Vice President of Nissan Motor Corporation. “Every design created is the result of a global and collaborative approach to create a vision of a new, premium lifestyle.”

“Infiniti is unique and we’re in our own place. We’re a mix of many cultures, so dualities are very natural for us,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director.

“We’re artisan yet technical, nuanced but bold. We have a romantic – yet powerful – view of the automobile. This is how we make strong objects of desire.”

Making a premium statement

A premium brand delineates what state of the art is in design and Infiniti has been pushing the envelope with the execution of its vehicles.

The design team works hand in hand with the engineering team to translate the passion and emotion of the design into a highly technical execution. Together they identify advanced manufacturing techniques or processes that can create a unique visual for Infiniti and give the brand an edge over traditional premium automakers.

This close cooperation has resulted in Infiniti’s ability to create some of the sharpest and deepest bodies in the industry currently, as well as paint colors that further amplify the sharpness, depth and contours of the body.

The Q80 Inspiration and the Q60 Concept are the first Infiniti vehicles to show such undulating bodies and breathtaking shoulder dips, design traits which are expected to resonate with the spontaneity of younger premium customers.

“Our culture of artistry is not just in design but also in every part of the company,” said Albaisa. “Because of our DNA, there’s a sense of thoughtfulness in manufacturing and assembly, so that the build also has an artistry.”

With advances in manufacturing and assembly, the engineers were able to keep the gaps between the doors as tight as possible, delivering a seamless and fluid body to the designers.

“With the engineering team reducing the gaps and making the panels deep, the artistry of the body has been enhanced dramatically,” explained Albaisa. “This results in the body becoming ornamental while the decorative elements are becoming minimal, giving the Infiniti vehicle a purity of form and shape.”

Infiniti signature

Within the umbrella of artistry and iconic proportions, Infiniti has stamped its vehicles with some design aspects which make them inimitably Infiniti.

The double arch grille anchors the front fascia and is a consistent feature across Infiniti models. Inspired by a bridge and its reflection in the water, the large and thick grille alludes to Infiniti’s credentials as a performance brand. On the Q80 Inspiration concept, the organic and three-dimensional grille functions much like the pulsing gills of a cruising shark, opening and closing to control air flow into the engine.

Infiniti’s hallmark headlight takes after the human eye, with the horizontal lighting signature intersecting across a third of the projector, giving the headlamp a stare that is both inviting and intense simultaneously. On the Q60 Concept, the headlight has very fine fiber optic-like lines branching out from the projector. When lit, these filaments of LED lights look like lines of the iris radiating from the pupil.

Another design feature special to Infiniti is the crescent cut C-pillar, which draws creatively from the first or last phases of the moon when only a sliver is visible. It has also evolved from a stylistic flourish to become an integral part of the vehicle structure. On the Q80 Inspiration, it is the air intake for the plug-in hybrid while on the Q60 Concept, it defines the structure of the C-pillar.

Global network of design studios

As Infiniti gears up for its product offensive, it has opened dedicated automotive design facilities around the world to reinforce the distinctiveness of Infiniti design. Other than the main design center in Japan, there are design studios in London, Beijing and San Diego.

Adhering to the adage that competition is healthy, Albaisa opens every new project to all four studios, which will work on designs for the entire car, including the interior and exterior. The winner of the internal design competition then leads the design development for that project. This was how the Q80 Inspiration was conceived in the London studio while the Beijing studio took the honors for the Infiniti Concept Vision Gran Turismo.

Each studio draws on the characteristics of its respective region and feeds it back into the creative network and cultural exchange, working together to design beautiful cars, which are globally recognized.

“The country or city where the studio is located does influence the design team. An Italian designing in California will come up with fundamentally different designs if he were designing in London or Beijing,” explained Albaisa. “The design studio becomes a window for us into the context of each region.”

The London studio is a reflection of Europe, which is one of the most competitive premium markets and is arguably the birthplace of premium goods. Because of this heritage, the team is particularly strong when it comes to proportions and the perfect balance of shapes, said Albaisa.

China, on the other hand, is relatively young in terms of car ownership, so the industry is generally new and car designs from the Beijing studio tend to be more daring and out of the box, challenging conventional notions of shapes and balance.

“Beijing is a microcosm of China, a country with such a long history but has opened its doors to the world only in the last few decades,” said Albaisa.

“There are many contrasts in the city – conservative and radical, traditional and modern, past and future. Such contrasts, like adrenaline, stimulate the designers’ creativity and innovation.”

With China quickly growing to become the second largest market in the world for Infiniti – and expected to be the largest eventually – the company is making sure that the Chinese perspective on premium brands and lifestyles are taken into consideration via the Beijing design studio.

“The Chinese customer is interested in a brand that has a story and a car whose uniqueness matches his entrepreneurial spirit,” said Albaisa. “And with its sense of bravery and artistry, Infiniti is a perfect fit for the Chinese market.”

The San Diego studio is Infiniti’s window into North America. The U.S. continues to be the biggest market for Infiniti, making it essential to hear the voice of the American customer. The city’s ever-temperate climate provides insights into the West Coast’s carefree lifestyle, while its proximity to Mexico ensures that customers’ wants and needs from that expanding market are taken into consideration.

Infiniti’s global design center near Tokyo provides executive guidance for the satellite studios, ensuring that all the studios and their designs are entirely focused on the brand. Close to the research and development center, it also has access to the latest engineering advances, which enable designers to pursue even more progressive designs.

Other than the physical environment, each region may have unique resources which could be utilized in the development of Infiniti concepts. For example, the London studio’s proximity to the Infiniti Red Bull Racing team opens doors to a network of physical resources.

“Formula One is not just an inspiration to us. There is a direct link to F1 in our design of Infiniti vehicles, especially with the use of aerodynamics,” said Simon Cox, Design Director, Infiniti Design London studio.

“This is an important design element as well as a very important performance element, and is an area we can use to our advantage in developing our very sculptural exteriors.”

Infiniti has been investing in dedicated design teams around the world as design is at the forefront of the brand’s development and accelerated product plan.

YOUNG DRIVERS AREN'T BIGGEST TRAFFIC VIOLATORS

November 22, 2017

According to a study performed on behalf of InsuranceQuotes.com, young drivers aren’t the worst traffic law offenders. And fascinatingly, males aren’t necessarily more likely than females to have a lead foot. Read on to find out what the most common traffic violations are and who the culprits are in most cases!

Who receives the most traffic tickets?
It’s not younger drivers who are getting the most traffic tickets these days. In fact, it’s more likely to be their parents. A study conducted in April 2015 by Princeton Survey Research Associates International, based on respondents who received at least one traffic ticket in the past five years, says drivers ages 30 to 49 receive the most tickets and also often have fairly high household incomes of $75,000. In 31 percent of cases drivers in the older age bracket received tickets, whereas only 25 percent of driver’s in the younger bracket (18 to 29) received tickets.

Who receives the most speeding tickets?
Data on speeding tickets is even more interesting. According to the study, it’s not young adults who drive too fast, or at least who get caught driving too fast. It’s actually older drivers 50 to 64 years old. The study also found another surprise: Women were more likely to get cited for speeding – 69 percent of women versus 64 percent of men.

What are the most common traffic tickets?
Speeding is by far the most common traffic violation in the U.S., making up 66 percent of tickets. Following this is running a stop sign or red light at 14 percent, driving without a license at 11 percent, not wearing a seat belt at 9 percent and driving while using a mobile device at 6 percent.

Why do younger drivers get higher insurance increases after receiving tickets?
Another interesting point brought up by the study is that even though older drivers get more tickets, they’re less likely to pay a higher auto insurance premium because of it, while younger drivers may see significant spikes. This is because younger drivers are more likely to get involved in accidents, so if they get a speeding ticket the insurance company assesses that their accident risk is higher. Conversely, seasoned drivers are less likely to be involved in accidents, so they are not hit as hard by insurance increases after receiving tickets.

The Back-up Collision Intervention System (BCI), if so equipped, uses radar sensors near the rear bumper to help alert the driver to approaching vehicles and sonar sensors to detect rear objects while backing up. If enabled, the system operates when the shift lever is in Reverse and the vehicle speed is less than approximately 5 miles-per-hour.

If an approaching vehicle or rear object is detected, the system notifies the driver with one or more of the following:
Warning chimes,
The Blind Spot Warning indicator lights on the inside of the front doors, and
Indicators on the AroundView Monitor on the touchscreen display.

If necessary, the system applies brief braking pressure while the vehicle is moving backward. After the automatic brake application, the driver must continue to depress the brake pedal to maintain brake pressure. If the driver’s foot is on the accelerator pedal, the system will push the accelerator upward before applying the brake. If you continue to press the accelerator, the system will not engage the brakes.

The BCI system turns on automatically when the engine is started. To temporarily turn off the BCI system, push the BCI switch on the right side of the instrument panel. The BCI OFF indicator light will illuminate in the instrument panel. The system will be re-activated the next time the shift lever is moved to the Reverse position.

To permanently turn off the BCI system:
Press this button on the left side of the steering wheel until SETTINGS is shown on the vehicle information display,
Use these switches to select DRIVER ASSISTANCE then press the ENTER button on the steering wheel,
Select BACK-UP COLLISION INTERVENTION, then
Highlight an option and press the ENTER button on the steering wheel to toggle the corresponding feature on or off.

Infiniti took the covers off its Infiniti Q70L Bespoke Edition at Auto Shanghai 2015, showcasing its concept car-inspired interior for the first time in front of the predominantly Chinese crowd.

The special version of the production Q70L, with a 5.9-inch (150 mm) longer wheelbase, features four luxurious seats wrapped in rich white quilted leather. This exploration is meant to fill the gap between the current interiors in production cars and luscious interiors of Infiniti’s concept cars.

Shaped by meticulous craftsmanship and three-dimensional textures, the cabin of the Q70L Bespoke Edition has been transformed into a cossetting space, hinting at how the artistry of Infiniti’s concept cars can become reality.

The production model of the Infiniti Q70, and two more Infiniti concepts – the Q80 Inspiration and Q60 Concept – were also making Auto Shanghai debuts.

The four-door Q80 Inspiration is designed to shake up the status quo among large premium sedans with its convention-defying body styling and daring proportions, while the angular exterior of the two-door Q60 Concept is a boldly designed precursor to a premium sports coupe to be produced in 2016.

“Today’s display reinforces Infiniti’s distinctive design language of power and artistry, with the Q70L translating that seamlessly into an interior treatment,” said Roland Krueger, president Infiniti Motor Company. “Our growing product portfolio is continuing to be inspired by our progressive design language as Infiniti further enhances its distinctive presence in the premium world.”

Infiniti’s global sales increased by 13.5 percent in 2014, with 186,200 vehicles sold. In the first quarter of 2015, the automaker recorded its best ever quarter of sales worldwide: 52,000 cars sold representing a year-on-year increase of 12 percent. Read more about recent Infiniti global sales performance here: Infiniti continues strong sales pace.

During the same quarter, sales in China increased by 28.3 percent year-on-year, highlighting the growing importance of the market in Infiniti’s ambitious global business plan. Building on recent investment, the next few years will see Infiniti’s manufacturing footprint continue to expand to five countries on three continents, and its global dealer network by the end of 2016 will grow by a third from the current 490 worldwide Infiniti Centers.

INFINITI QX30

November 22, 2017

Spontaneous and fluid, the QX30 Concept is Infiniti’s design idea of a premium compact crossover that not only effortlessly handles anything the city or weather throws at it, but does it with style and panache.

The sloping coupe lines have been beefed up with robust facets to give the four-door concept an air of being ready to explore its neighborhood and beyond. The high ground clearance at 7.6 inches gives the driver an elevated view of the surroundings and confidence to go through potholes or uneven terrain.

Standing at 174.3 inches (4430 mm) long, 71.4inches (1815 mm) wide and 59.9 inches (1520 mm) high, the Infiniti QX30 Concept is a progressive interpretation of a premium compact crossover for the future.

“We wanted the spontaneous fluidity of the QX30 Concept design to cut through the urban clutter and rigidity, reflecting its go-anywhere and spur-of-the-moment nature,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director. “With its higher stance and edgier design to match its tough capabilities, you can almost visualize how the QX30 Concept floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.”

The QX30 Concept is Infiniti’s next step in extending the brand into the global compact premium segment, following the 2013 debut of the Q30 Concept in Frankfurt. Both vehicles are in the same family, with the QX30 Concept about 1.2 inches (30 mm) higher than the Q30 Concept.

“The Q30 Concept was like a panther, lithe and slender. We transformed the QX30 Concept into a mountain lion, strong and muscular,” said Albaisa. “The QX30 Concept design conveys a gritty sense of durability but tough doesn’t mean rough. We’ve retained a sense of artistry throughout, even in the most functional of parts.”

Stylish protection
At first glance, the signature Infiniti face is unmistakable, with the meshed motif of the double arch grille framed by the accusing stare characteristic of the Infiniti headlamps.

The satin chrome of the bumper lower immediately conveys the reassurance that comes from a big protective plate. The designers dropped the bumper lower and enlarged the side openings, giving the impression that the grille hangs lower. The flaring air intakes visually intersect with the lower part of the grille, playing up the contrast between the grille and the fluid lines of the airfoil.

“You get this sense of heavy breathing from the car, as though the car is a well-honed athlete performing at a high level,” explained Albaisa.

The theme of stylish protection runs throughout the entire car, from the matte carbon trim that outlines the lower profile to the milled sword-like metal insert in the kick plates under the doors.

The QX30 Concept’s sleek exterior shape is composed of bold sections, deep uppercuts and intersections to create Infiniti’s hallmark “dual wave” effect. The aerodynamic design accentuates its athletic silhouette, showcasing its confident capability. Carbon fiber in the lower cladding and roof bar supports add to the car’s lightweight performance character.

In the rear, the designers have sculpted nuanced graphics into what would be a run-of-the-mill skid plate, reinforcing the sense of contemporary fortification.

Where rubber meets the road
The QX30 Concept is meant to awaken one’s sense of adventure and Infiniti designers achieved this by giving the crossover a sure-footed stance. Taking a wheel-oriented approach, they physically increased the ratio of tire to the body by using 21-inch wheels and tires. They also increased the blackout around the wheel opening for a rock solid look.

Juxtaposing black carbon and aluminum that echoes the body color, the designers came up with a unique two-tone design for the wheel. The spokes are a mix of three-dimensional milled aluminum-alloy and matte rubber material, interlocking and twisting in and out in a distinctive manner.

On the surface, the spokes give the illusion of thick metal. But up close, they are aesthetically lightweight, thanks to the three-dimensional milling that allows the spokes to be undercut into thin surfaces.

“Playing the fluidity of the hard material against the rubber feeling of the soft material was key to how we used expected materials in an unexpected way,” said Albaisa. “It is the unconventional execution of a conventional element that makes the QX30 Concept a style leader.”

A roof with a curated view
True to its crossover nature, the QX30 Concept sports roof racks, which not only have practical uses but also frame the view through the glass roof. The roof racks extend toward the center line, creating a captivating perspective especially for rear passengers to see through.

“Sometimes a clear view out of a rectangular window isn’t all that interesting. But if there’s an object between you and what you want to see, that object artistically contours your view of it,” said Albaisa. “Likewise, the roof racks become a sculpture which you see through and around. In an almost interactive way, the roof racks compose and frame your environment, inspiring and enhancing your view of the outside world.”

Inviting interior, shared spaces
The authentic, warm and inviting interior of the QX30 Concept sets the tone for Infiniti’s aim to emotionally engage the vehicle’s occupants.

The dark environment made up of brown leather and blue accents dovetails with the outdoors appeal of the exterior, while all four seats have been streamlined for a suspended look, evoking a feeling of trained athleticism.

The designers opted for a U-shaped seat frame and partially wrapped it with a layer of premium Connolly saddle leather offset by contrast blue stitching. The exposed part of the frame encloses a see-through gap, which lends a three-dimensional quality to the interior without adding visual weight. Seat bolsters are covered in quilted leather for additional comfort.

By keeping the seats slim, the designers were able to enhance the impression of shared space within the cabin. By reducing the gulf between the driver and the passengers, the designers were able to make the car a place for occupants to connect with one another.

Reflecting Infiniti’s philosophy that premium character begins with high-quality materials, the understated expression of personality in the QX30 Concept interior is bolstered by the creative use of genuine materials throughout.

The intricate leather weave pattern in the carpet adds texture to the cabin while the bright blue backing underneath supplements subtle touches of color to the dominantly brown environment.

An atmosphere of precise detailing also pervades the interior, clearly evident in the tailor-wrapped steering wheel and armrest. The saddle leather trim on the armrest extends into the B-pillar, making both the armrest and the door appear longer and sleeker.

“The QX30 Concept embraces the city and is an explorer at heart,” said Francois Bancon, Infiniti Vice President, Product Strategy. “Its chiseled good looks ensure that it’ll always be the trendsetter whether it’s roaming the neighborhood or wandering further afield.”
